Matt Heffernan is a dynamic American soccer player known for his versatility as a left winger (LW), central attacking midfielder (CAM), and center forward (CF). Competing at the highest levels of NCAA Division I and USL, Heffernan stands at 6'0" (183 cm) and 165 lbs (75 kg), blending technical skill, creativity, and goal-scoring ability to make a significant impact on the field. He has played for Brooklyn FC, NJIT (NCAA D1), Merrimack College (NCAA D1), NJ Copa, Boston City FC, and Denton Diablos.
A 2024 MLS Draft-eligible player, Heffernan has earned several accolades, including NPSL National Champion, Roja League MVP, NEC Player of the Week, UPSL Top Goal Scorer (Spring 2024), and NCAA Team of the Week for his performance in a win over #11 Vermont. Signed for Brooklyn FC in 2024, joining an ambitious club rising to the USL Championship. Played a key role in the squad, finishing as one of the team’s top goal scorers and netting two crucial goals to keep playoff hopes alive. Featured in Brooklyn FC’s official debut match against First Division Ecudorian side CD Cuenca at Maimonides Park.

NJIT (America East)
NCAA D1
Signed an NCAA Division 1 scholarship with NJIT in the America East Conference. Made his debut against Villanova and faced the 2024 national champions, Vermont. Played in nationally televised matches on ESPN and earned a spot on the America East Academic Honor Roll. Helped NJIT reach the America East semifinal, competing against top-ranked New Hampshire.

Competed in the USL League Two for the 2023 season with New Jersey Copa. Played against top MLS Draft picks in one of the most competitive conferences in USL League Two. Helped the team finish 4th in the conference while competing against high-level competition throughout the season.

Played for Boston City FC in the USL League Two season under now-professional coach Joao Garcia. Competed in a Brazilian-style system, gaining valuable experience alongside professional players. The team finished 4th in the highly competitive Northeast Conference, with Heffernan contributing to the squad's overall success.

Signed an NCAA Division 1 soccer scholarship with Merrimack College near Boston, Massachusetts. Competed against top programs such as Duke, Boston College, and Harvard. Made his debut against Mount St. Mary's, recording an assist and contributing to a win. Helped the team finish 2nd in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and advance to the NEC Semi-Final game.
2019-2021
Denton Diablos
USL 2/NPSL
Signed at 17, Heffernan became one of the youngest signees for the Denton Diablos. Scored a crucial free-kick in the 88th minute of his debut and went on to be one of the club's top goal scorers, finishing just behind Trevor Amann, now with Sacramento Republic in the USL Championship. Heffernan's contributions were key to the team's success.
